January assessment learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW : Muhammed, a fair attempt from you here. Starting to analyse unseen media products to a good standard e.g (Q1). Good knowledge of BBC as a PSB in digital age.
EBI : Revise conglomerate ownership. Too descriptive of Audience theories but not validating them in relation to the question (statement).

Mark : 20/43 (D)

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Q1: The ‘h.i.t.h’ motif is repeated in a circular design on Stormzy’s head, mimicking a crown. This
continues the connotations of royalty and British power suggested in the Union Jack, font
and colour of the text. It also reflects Stormzy’s status as one of the world’s leading artists in
2020.

Q2:  Conglomerate ownership

Q3: Public service broadcasting creates a market that commercial broadcasters can’t fairly
compete in – they are against channels that do not need to attract large ratings to survive.

Q4: Should have brought in different knowledge outside the theories to reach a justified conclusion instead of just going on about the theories. E.g. Talk about what the news could be saying about the media.

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment? You may also want to think here whether you had completed all the original blog tasks from last term before doing the assessment.

4/10 - This is because when I did begin to revise I did begin quite late and only made flashcards as a last minute revision technique to help me try passing the mock. Thankfully, the mock did go well despite me knowing all the knowledge I could have revised for. Next time, I should revise more earlier and not leave it last second.

4) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.

I got the strategy for number 1 right which was the buying of smaller companies which I was awarded with 1 mark for. However, for the other 2 strategies I got 0 marks which again reflects on that I needed to have revised more for this mock and needed to have better time management.

5) Look at your answer for Question 3. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?

Yes I feel like for question 3 I did talk both for and against for the BBC and the public service broadcasting (PSB) and gave a balanced argument for both sides. What I could have done better is for my last paragraph wrote a justified conclusion to show which side that I am fully on as it would have helped my examiner know that I do know how to reach a conclusion and that I have the knowledge to do so.

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 4 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.

One reason why I would agree with the view that the media has a damaging and everlasting effect on audiences around the world is that you can never trust what the media tells you. This is because of the rise of fake news online and how you can't tell what is real from fake. Evidence to support my answer is Gerbner's Cultivation theory. Gerbner suggested that heavy viewers of the media such as the news are impacted more in a negative way than a positive way as they are always the ones to believe in things that are not real with what is happening in the world around us which gives us the fake idea of the world being a violent or scary place to be in when it is really not. This is also called the 'Mean World Syndrome' which can affect each and everyone of us.
