Magazine cover learner response

 1) Add your finished magazine cover as a JPEG image.

2) Type up your feedback from your teacher. If you've received this by email, you can copy and paste it across - WWW and EBIs. You don't need to include a mark or grade if you don't want to.

WWW: I really like what you’ve done with your finished product. The placement of the cover lines and consistent use of colour scheme of your font/typography is strong, and this reinforces the men’s fashion brand identity too. The camera shot and lighting are also good examples of applying media language to communicate meaning to your product. You have considered the cover lines which relate to existing versions of GQ magazine.

EBI: There are two main lessons to take from this production work. Firstly, the masthead, which you identified in your evaluation, is in the wrong position of your front cover. If you look back at the other GQ magazine covers, they are usually placed on the top left which does not fully fit the brand’s house style. The second aspect is your research – some of the other GQ versions you have research are the Indian edition of GQ which may not completely reflect the international versions. Attention to detail will be crucial when it comes to producing your own coursework in Year 13.  Your planning and very short evaluation have prevented from getting further marks and also some slight spelling mistakes in places.

Mark out of 15 for Media Language: 8

Estimated A Level coursework grade: C / D

3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.)

*Satisfactory application of knowledge and understanding of media language, demonstrated by the generally appropriate but inconsistently effective selection and combination of straightforward elements to communicate generally clear meanings throughout the product.

4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level?

Make sure my title of GQ is on the left side and not the right and add more cover lines around my main image to show that the magazine is filled with a lot of different types of genres of information as well as making my colour scheme more colourful as I had plain simple colours which wouldn't catch anyone eyes.

5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed?

Make sure you begin really early as there is a lot of planning to make a magazine it is not as easy as it looks as there are different levels of editing that must be done in place so it looks as realistic and formal as possible for whichever magazine cover you go for. In addition to this, make sure you do not overdo it with the colours or taglines you use make sure you keep it short and sweet maybe 4-5 cover lines in and not 6-7 as it could just be an overwhelming amount for the reader to get through so it is best to ensure you space out your cover lines well so it looks better in the eyes of the reader instead of just reading one huge lump of text.
